Gender Sensitization

What is “Gender”?

‘Gender’ is a psychological term which refers to our awareness and reaction to biological sex. Gender is the socio-cultural definition of boy and girl, male and female. Not only are their responsibilities set by the society but also norms and values, dress codes, attitudes opportunities rights, mobility, freedom of expression, priorities or even dreams are determined by the society.

What is Gender Sensitization?

Gender sensitization refers to the modification of behavior by raising awareness of gender equality concerns. Gender sensitizing is about changing behavior and installing empathy into the views that we hold about our own and the other gender.

Being gender sensitive means that you are aware of gender issues, understand the role of society in shaping gender identities; and believe in gender equality. Gender sensitization education and training help achieve this goal.

Thus, the logical step is to sensitize young population towards gender issues during their formative years when they are in primary and secondary schools. Awareness goes a long way in gradually changing mind sets, and where better to create awareness among young people.

Gender sensitization theories claim that modification of the behavior of teachers and parents etc. towards children can have a causal effect on gender equality. It helps people in examining their attitudes and beliefs and questioning the ‘realities’ they thought they know. Thus, we have to sensitize students at a young age on gender issues to usher in a more gender balanced society in future.
