Why Do People Commit Suicide???
Suicide is the third leading cause of death. One question everyone
asks: Why that person committed suicide???
But the answer is complex!!!
Depression: Depression is found to be major cause of suicide; untreated
depression can lead to higher risk of suicide. Deep emotional pain often pays a
significant role in suicidal behavior and risk of suicide.
Impulsiveness: Sometimes person commit suicide impulsively on petty issues.
Hopelessness: People commit suicide when they feel that “they have lost all
hope” and overshadow all of the good things in their life.
Fear of Failure and
Actual Failure: Sometimes they commit suicide
just because they have fear of loss like-Losing job or income or any big
financial loss, academic failure, break ups or failure in love relationship, shaming
or humiliation etc. may be other reasons.
Illness: Many people who suffer chronic pain or severe illness commit
suicide.
Medication: Some medications, such as antidepressants, can cause some people
to experience suicidal feelings. This side effect is associated with a type of
antidepressant called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). But all antidepressant
have this as possible risk. Some antipsychotic medications and mood stabilizers
also cause some people to experience suicidal feelings.
Warning Signs of Suicide
The Red Flag
Feelings & Behaviors that may require Immediate Attention
1.
Inability to Sleep or
sleeping too much.
2.
Social withdrawing
and, isolated most of the time.
3. Feeling down, hopeless or helpless most of the
time. Having no purpose in life.
4.
Concentration problems
that are interfering with their work or home life.
5.
Poor self-care.
6.
Using nicotine, food,
drugs or alcohol to cope with difficult emotions.
7.
Negative self-destructive
thoughts or fears.
8.
Thoughts of death or
suicide. Looking for a way to kill oneself. Suicidal plans and attempts.
9.
Talking about wanting
to die. Talking about being burden to others.
10.
Acting anxious,
agitated.
11.
Displaying extreme
mood swings.
If you identify with any of these red flag symptoms, it is best to
take these signs seriously and consider making an appointment with a mental
health professional.
How to Protect
1. Strong
Social Support System-provide strong connections to family and community
support.
2. Providing
professional mental health and other clinical interventions immediately.
3. Restricted
access to lethal means of suicide.
4. Development
of problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
5. Religious
and cultural beliefs and example that discouraging suicide.
6. Handling
problems in a non-violent way.
7. Learn
self-preservation skills.
8. Provide examples of inspiring models who have
struggled hard in their life.
9.
Learning optimistic attitude for life and future.
10.
Lowering the high aspiration, and stop expecting too much in life.
