What is Wellbeing, Quality of life & Wellness?
Generally well-being
refers to “a life going well” in a variety of ways. Its meaning and
contents fluctuates dependent on who is using it, and why they are using it.
Ordinarily life often presents the individual with extraordinary
challenges, complexities, setbacks and hardships. Psychological health concerns
itself with how you cope, how you are doing in response and whether you
find life to be interesting and enjoyable. In the end, psychological
health and well-being is basically about: “How Are You Doing?”
Wellness is the condition of good physical and mental health, especially
when maintained proper diet, exercise and habits.
High level wellness involves giving good care to your physical self,
using your mind constructively, expressing your emotions effectively, being
creatively involved with those around you and being concerned about your
physical, psychological and spiritual environment.
Johnson
(1978) has defined well-being in
a form of happiness as “a global
assessment of a person’s quality of life according to his own chosen criteria”.
Carol Ryff said, “Happiness is
everything, or is it? She contrasts this with subjective well-being or hedonic
well-being.
Positive
psychological definitions of Well-being generally include some of 6 general
characteristics:
1. The
active pursuit of well-being
2. A
balance of attributes
3. Positive
emotions or life satisfaction
4. Prosocial
behavior
5. Multiple
dimension
6. Personal
optimization.
WHO
defines wellness as: “Wellness is the optimal state of health of individuals
and groups. There are two focal concerns: the realization of the fullest
potentials of an individual physically, psychologically, socially, spiritually
and economically and the fulfillment of one’s role expectations in the family,
workplace, community and other settings.
Well-being is a Holistic and
Multidimensional concept
There is no physical well-being without psychological well-being. Health
psychologists suggests how stress affects our immune system and our
psychological health or how being happy or in a good mood can even minimize
cancer symptoms and development

·
Subjective Well-being (SWB)
was defined by Deiner (2009) as the general evaluation of one’s quality
of life. It has 3 components:
1. A
cognitive appraisal that one’s life is good (life Satisfaction).
2. Experiencing
positive levels of pleasant emotions;
3. Experiencing
relatively low levels of negative moods.
Psychological and Emotional health and well-being should not be
confused with the question of whether or not you suffer from mental or
emotional disorder. When we talk about psychological health, we are referring
to how ordinarily people are doing in life. In other words, if you are feeling
distressed, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you are mentally ill.
Well-being has two separate issues
The upside involves
two factors: “Is your mood generally
positive, and “Do you enjoy a number of Positive emotional ties”. In other
words, “are you happy” and “do you generally feel calm and peaceful”.
The downside, involves three factors: “Do you suffer anxiety, are you depressed, and do you feel like you have lost control and can’t do anything about your feelings”. This is the other side of the coin, the experience of the psychological distress.
